Business of the Month- A Short Story

Mendham Jewerlers

Bob Diffin the owner of Mendham Jewelers started his career while he was in high school when he began working after school at the Molk Brothers store on Route 4 in East Paterson. When he graduated, he worked in New York in the diamond district learning his craft.

To earn money, he delivered 424 newspapers a day but on Sundays a job learning to set diamonds.

In 1979, he worked at Sterns on Route 4 in the watch and jewelry repair department once again enhancing his career. After 2 years at Sterns, it was back to his original job, the Gift and Jewelry Shop on Route 4 as a Jeweler.

In 1984, a lighter salesman told him about Russ Scalzo who was selling his shop in the Mendham Shopping Center. 3 months later the store was Bob’s. One of the smallest stores, only 1 counter wide on the west side of the center between the bakery and the hardware store but it was Bob’s way to bigger and better sales.

In 1988, a shoe store became available on the east side of the shopping center and Bob moved into a much larger place double the size of the original. He felt the need for more inventory as his reputation was spreading. Now 35 years later he is a well known area jeweler.

Bob is President of the Mendham Business Association with much heralded success in Mendham Borough such as the Holly Trail, the Franklin Memorial Golf Outing, High School scholarships and the Abner Doubleday Event.
